Before the fall of 1923, no one understood the nature of galaxies or the immense distance scale of the cosmos. Edwin Hubble discovered the nature of galaxies with his observations of this object, the Andromeda Galaxy, M31. This enormous system contains billions of stars and we now know the universe contains 100 billion or more galaxies.
Distance = 2.5 million light-years
