Explore Scientific Smart Microscope Slide: Fish Blood Smear

Fish are the most primitive vertebrates but they possess many of the molecules and cell types found in higher vertebrates, including humans. But the immune system (the ability to ward off disease) is poorly understood in most fish species as it is different than the higher vertebrates. This is a hot topic in the scientific community for the field of aquaculture for ornamental fish and for fish commercially raised harvested for human consumption.

By studying the red blood count (RBCs) of the bood, scientists can observe the immunity processes which then lead them to development of treatment to eradicate disease in fish.
